The AMPED Technology Training Center was conceived to anchor the western side of a proposed Innovation Corridor, which will run from Russell/Portland in the west to NuLu in the east, with a transit loop down Main and Market Streets. The client’s organization began its history as a music education program serving the West End of Louisville. It has expanded to provide the same population workforce training and a business incubator. The Center will stimulate innovation in the digital health and tech training sector by hosting a coordinated stack of workforce and business development programs to merge learning, creativity, and entrepreneurship and to stimulate a more robust and equitable healthcare cluster.
Originally, the design combined new construction and portions of the existing buildings at the corner of Market and 17th Street, honoring the history of the neighborhood while looking to the future. The original masonry construction was eventually rebuilt in the original configuration since it was degraded beyond repair. This concept remained in place, keeping the masonry anchor on the corner, extending the building to the west with contrasting lighter materials, and finally placing a floating roof over all of it, tying all together below.
The site is a small urban corner, so the building was anchored to the corner and Market Street, with a small parking area to the rear / alley side. There are plans to extend this campus and infill the middle of the empty block with a grocery store and music school.
The program is organized with the program space arranged along Market Street and circulation set to the alley side.
